Similar to natural teeth, the gums around implants can also be subjected to bacterial colonisation leading to inflammation of gums (periimplant mucositis) and loss of bone support around the implants (Periimplantitis). Depending on the severity of the condition, the treatment may involve nonsurgical debridement (scaling under local anesthetic), surgical therapy including open flap debridement and bone regeneration. In advanced cases of peri- implantitis removal of the implant may also be considered.
