Nonsurgical periodontal treatment aims to clean the tooth surface, above and below the gum line, to remove the bacteria and the toxins they release, causing gum disease. Nonsurgical cleaning is performed under local anaesthetic for your comfort. Based on both the severity of your periodontal disease and the bacterial accumulation, nonsurgical treatment may be completed at a rate of a quarter or half a mouth per appointment. The obvious limitations of nonsurgical periodontal treatment are the severity of your periodontal disease, the anatomy of the tooth, your systemic diseases and smoking status.
